Either just started working in the corporate or spent there decades you can be easily confused about the structure. Project Management Institute recognizes 3 major types of organizational structures. Here, we are translating it into Corparium language to help with comprehension:
- Functional is the traditional hierarchical structure with the strong presence of line functional managers, thinking of military type.
2. Matrix organizations has multiple types and less hierarchical.
3. Projectized – these are rare and mostly exist in the complex service provide industry, such as consulting, IT services, equipment and technology related services.
4. Composite organization are the most interesting ones as combine features of matrix, functional and projectized organization. You may notice that most of the meeting will include multiple managers and almost no personal contributors. These organizations are the most fun to work in as you my spend days and weeks trying to figure out who is doing what there.
